Originally from Athens, Greece, I moved to Madison with my family 8 years ago. After my undergraduate studies, I hope to attend medical school. Here on campus, I volunteer at the UW Children's hospital and participate in cardiac proteomics research at the Ge lab. Whenever I can, I like spending time outdoors with my friends. BAILEY BESTA
Hi all! My name is Bailey Besta and I'm a senior majoring in Neurobiology and Psychology, in addition to completing a certificate in Global Health. I grew up on the west side of the wonderful city of Madison, WI. I currently work as a certified nursing assistant on the General Medical unit of Unity Point - Meriter hospital. I love working in the medical field because of the reward of helping others and making a positive impact within the world. I joined Cardiac on Campus my sophomore year after becoming CPR certified through one of the club's free public classes. I was immediately attracted to the club's mission of promoting healthy living for all individuals and had to get involved myself. In full circle, I am now a certified CPR instructor for the club for Cardiac on Campus. With my spare time, I enjoy soaking up sunshine while doing any and all outdoor activities, dancing, practicing yoga and attending way too many concerts. I cannot wait to see what is instore for the future of Cardiac on Campus. It's going to be a great year!

After getting my BSN I plan to go to grad school to be a Nurse Practitioner and specialize in obstetrics, neonatal care, or -- you guessed it! -- cardiology! In my free time, I love to grab a bite at the terrace, cheer on the Badgers, and soak up the sun on Bascom! I joined Cardiac on Campus right at the beginning of my freshman year here and loved every minute of it! I am so excited to be serving another year as the vice president for this amazing organization and can’t wait to see what this year brings!

CPR Awareness Chair:

KELSEY WEDDIG

Hi everyone! My name is Kelsey Weddig and I’m a junior majoring in Nursing. I am born and raised in Door County, Wisconsin. My freshman year of college, I was at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, planning to major in Biology and later pursue my BSN. After having quickly realized I wanted to study nursing right away and be closer to home, I transferred my sophomore year of college to UW-Madison. It’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made! Currently, I work as a Healthy Academics Prevention Specialist at University Health Services. I chose to pursue nursing because of my chronic heart condition I’ve had since I was 11. If it weren’t for my journey with it, I wouldn’t have realized I want to help people like me! I joined Cardiac on Campus because I love what the club represents for cardiovascular health on campus and in the Madison community. It also aligns with myself personally with my heart condition and my interests. When school isn’t consuming my life, I love going to concerts (I am a concert junkie), watching sports (football is my favorite- Go Pack Go!), boating (when there’s a lake around), and spending time with my family. I’m ecstatic to see what this year brings with Cardiac on Campus!

Red Tutu Trot Chairs:

KARL HUMMEL
My name is Karl Hummel, and I am one of the Red Tutu Trot Chairs! I have wanted to attend the University of Wisconsin – Madison ever since I was a little oddball running around the west side of Madison, so to say I am happy here at Madison is an understatement. I will be finishing up a degree in Psychology in the Spring of 2021 (four years flew by!) and once that’s finished I plan to return to UW to get a degree in Nursing. Regarding my long-term plans, oh geez. The two current routes are serving the military in a medical role or going back to school to become a Nurse Practitioner. Cardiac on Campus stood out to me as a club as it offered CPR classes, educated people on cardiovascular health (duh) and everybody was nice, so I joined last Fall. In my down time from school and club activities, I like to backpack all around the American West, go on long runs, garden, and read any book I can get my hands on. Baking cookies, brownies and banana bread is cool too. I am excited to participate in the upcoming Red Tutu Trot and promote healthy hearts everywhere!

CHRISTINA KAFKIS
Hi! My name is Christina Kafkis and I am a junior majoring in Neurobiology with a certificate in European Studies and Art History. I am from Wilmette, Illinois, just north of Chicago. This is my first year in Cardiac On Campus and I am blown away with the dedication and wonderful efforts made by the members and executive team. I am so excited to be working side by side with them as a Red Tutu Trot chair! When I’m not working on school or volunteering in the birthing center at Meriter Hospital, you can usually find me reading a book or hitting an early morning spin class. In future, I hope to pursue a degree in medicine and practice as a physician. I am deeply interested in neuroscience, but also have passion for history and hope to do something with that (maybe get another degree!). During my time on the executive board, I hope to cultivate a greater understanding of cardiac health and the ever expanding field surrounding it. Through events like the Red Tutu Trot, I look forward to taking part in spreading awareness to the community on heart health and inspire others to do the same!
